Burning Man Earth Guardians - Ideas for EG camp

Overall Concept: We're trying to think of new ways to stimulate the Burning Man community to appreciate the Black Rock environment and embrace LNT in their own creative ways. By focusing the communityís tremendous artistic, technical and spiritual energy, we can go beyond ìno traceî and leave positive traces on the land. Below are some of our initial ideas to make this happen.

General Ideas:
(1) To include educational and inspirational art projects within the pavilion.
(2) To build community through field-based nature education and hands-on environmental restoration,
(3) To make the EG camp comfortable, interesting, interactive, fun and full of activity.
(4) To work with specific artists on projects to inspire the burning man community to appreciate the desert environment.  Ideas for art theme include: Islands of life in an ocean of dust and Resorting Wildness.

Shown below is a working bubble diagram which illustrates some of the ideas for this year's camp.

Continuing Themes  for Camp

- Black Rock Interpretive/Interactive Walk: Camp will include the Interpretive walk.  This walk can be described as an interactive, self-guided 24/7 attraction that includes information on the Black Rock desert, itís history, LNT practices  and desert stewardship activities.  The walk has been designed to inspire participants to reconsider their own impacts.  Think about the kinds of displays you would find at park or welcome center, but with a strong Burning Man twist.  Visualize a walled, curved pathway (curtains) inside the pavilion.  The art piece will incorporate lights, sounds, and textures.  It is an introduction and tribute to the Black Rock desert and an examination of our part the desert.  It is hoped that after participating in the walk, residents of Black Rock city will see the desert with new eyes, reexamine their own impacts to the area and be inspired to start at Leave No Trace and go further in their own creative ways

- Comfort is Key: To make camp comfortable: weíve included a lounge/library space, a private EG kitchen and a shower/sink for EGís to use.  Note that all EG camp space should be LNT-compliant (we need to walk the walk, not just talk the talk).

- Activities: As an eco-themed camp, we will be a staging area for field groups and classes and a collaboration space for artists and naturalists.  We're hoping to have yoga and digeridoo classes lined up again. Itís important to think about what we want to do in the pavilion spaces, then design the space (rather than the other way around). - so let us know if you have more ideas soon!  send email to earthguardians@burningman.com!

- Art: In addition to the interpretive walk  (described above) we already have several other art projects at the EG pavilion.    We have a two-sided poster/display featuring environmental destruction vs global healing and a new fabric paintings to decorate other parts of the pavilion.  We also have a art piece involving many flashing lights that drew lots of participants to the pavilion day and night.

- Camp Location: We will stay on the esplanade to keep things lively.  At this location we get  direct traffic to camp to participate in the interactive walk and other Earth Guardian volunteer activities.

- For More Information: See drawings of the site layout, pavilion floorplan and pavilion details below.
