Harley K. Bierman

hramazon@burningman.com

Burning Man Name: Heady LaRoo

First Burning Man Attended: 1991

Burningman Camp / Project Affiliations:
Community Services Director

Why am I an Earth Guardian: I am an Earth Guardian because it needed to happen! As the event grow we needed an infra structure to maintain the quality of cleanup that we had created as our standard so I took on the job of developing this wing of BM.

What is my Earth Guardian Vision: To have every participant understand the reasons for Leave No Trace and have the knowledge to be able to do it.

What are my Earth Guardian Activities: Managing and growing the Earth Guardians

Nancy Abodeely

Burning Man Name: None yet found; considering Playa Hugger

First Burning Man Attended: 2000

Burningman Camp / Project Affiliations: Earth Guardians, Earth Guardian Pavilion/Center Camp Member, Leave No Trace Trainer, BLM Volunteer

Why am I an Earth Guardian: Earth Guardians is the natural place for me to participate in Burning Man and combine my love of art, my fascination with technology, and my passion for the outdoors

What is my Earth Guardian Vision: Burning Man as a sustainable cultural event and learning experience, where artists, techies, and participants of every stripe come to appreciate, celebrate, and nurture a special piece of the Earth
MOOP is an anachronism. Leave No Trace is a community practice, not a an organizational mission. Burning Man becomes a touchstone for life-enhancing actions and lifestyles

What are my Earth Guardian Activities: Theme Camp Liaison Team, Community Education, doing what I can to inspire participants and camps to find simple and creative ways to leave no trace.

Shona Abontu

Why am I an Earth Guardian: There is no tomorrow.

What is my Earth Guardian Vision: 20/20

What are my Earth Guardian Activities: E.G. Web Design Team, LNT facilitator and bringer of delicious goodness.

Larry Breed

Burning Man Name: ember

First Burning Man Attended:1995

Burning Man Camp / Project Affiliations: 1995 -- proto-DPW, 1996 -- Erected the original trash fence. 1997 -- DPW, the Big Ice Ball, and trash pickup of Hualapai's far side. 1998 -- Earth Guardians, BLM volunteer. 1999 -- EG, Black Rock Gazette, The Chaotick (flaming tetherball), Oct-Nov detail playa sweep. 2000 -- EG, BRG, Trash Tunnel, cleanup.

Why am I an Earth Guardian: I like empty places, places with few or no human traces. With very little effort I can leave a place so it's just as empty next time I return. Better than that, I can create an empty place for others, by removing whatever is out of place. I'm an EG because I like working with people who are EG's.

What is my Earth Guardian Vision: In 1995 I had an honest to goodness vision. While toiling across the ancient desert of the Arabian Nights, I come across a magical city, filled with festivities. When I awake in the morning it will have disappeared, leaving not even footprints. If I work at it, and get friends involved, it's possible for Burning Man to create such magic over and over again.

Appear, celebrate, and disappear. We are the only large group in the world that combines all three. If we can do it well, then other groups will learn to do it too.

What are my Earth Guardian Activities: Big undertakings and heroic efforts, occasionally; picking up every little thing -- thinking of Moop as Easter eggs -- every minute of the day.

Ray Bruman

rbruman@dnai.com

Burning Man Name: Ray Bees

First Burning Man Attended: 1997

Burning Man Camp / Project Affiliations: Sporosite (1997-1999)
Crucible Wishbone Sculpture (2000)

Why am I an Earth Guardian: I responded to the call for cleanup volunteers after the 1999 event and was appalled. After months of work by hundreds of volunteers, three days before the BLM inspection date the playa was still littered with burn scars, piles of large debris (sailboat mast, railroad ties) and other crap. I decided that if Burning Man could not clean up its act, we must shut it down.

It appears that Burning Man 2001 will be the last, unless we solve the problem of clogging the toilets with trash. In fact, 2000 would have been the last, if we had not been given one more chance.

I am an Earth Guardian in the hope of helping to save Burning Man from extinction.

What is my Earth Guardian Vision: In my Vision, we make it clear and easy for most of the participants to Leave No Trace. Since there will always be some lapses, including serious ones, we must also encourage some people to make an extra effort. It is real work, literally as nasty as changing a diaper. Therefore we must bring as much humor, patience, dedication and energy as we can muster.

What are my Earth Guardian Activities: Helping to write and design information and announcements for participants, helping to set up the Earth Guardian Camp, enjoying the 2001 Burning Man to the hilt, while passing the word that we absolutely have to keep the toilets free of debris, staying behind to help with the cleanup and see for myself how we did.

Allan Chen

Burning Man name: Negawatt

First Burning Man attended: 1996

Burning camp affiliations: Earth Guardians

Why am I an Earth Guardian: I spent some time in the desert during my college years when I studied geology and geophysicsóand I learned to love the landscapeís stark beauty and its lifeforms. Iíve been an environmentalist since at least the first Earth Day in 1970. Today I help people become energy-efficient, save energy, and reduce pollution. So it seemed natural to do the same thing at Burning Man that I try to do the rest of the year.

What is my Earth Guardian Vision: that everyone at Burning Man who is not already an environmentalist become one there.

What are my Earth Guardian Activities: under development

Burning Man Name : Vulgar V. Vulture, Trashpicker Extraordinaire, Moopoligist

First Burning Man Attended: 1997

Burning Man Camp / Project Affiliations : House of Doors Radio, Camera Obscura & Makeout Room, Nebulous Entity Construction Crew and Bionic Doorman, Brown-dot Trash Ranger, DPW slave, Cafe slave, Order of the Buffalo.

Why am I an Earth Guardian: I am an earthguardian because I must do penance for being a slob in a former life. Once I was filthy. I left crap all over the place and it made the world a poorer place. My greed and gluttony came to consume me and all those around me until I became an untouchable. Now I work endlessly, tirelessly, to heal the world. My goal is unreachable, but my mission is visible. I work to create a world without Matter-Out-Of-Place. I seek the removal of MOOP. My inspiration is the sight of the vast, unpeopled playa, unsullied and silent. It is there that I soar and find strength..

What is my Earth Guardian Vision: I am a vulture in search of a posse. I want to find fellow vultures who share my passion for swooping down on MOOP. I want the company of fellow creatures in the task that is before me. I want to party and keep it klean. I want a really cool, a really bad, jacket. I want my shadow to cross over the landscape and sweep it clear wherever I go. I want to run into fellow earthguardians everywhere, on and off the playa. I want to find myself on an elevated level of existence when I soar into the beyond.

What are my Earth Guardian Activities: I will bring bags to the people. I will bring buckets and gloves and shovels to the people. I will bring tasks to the people. I will bring teams of eager beavers and meager leavers to the people. I will go to the public areas, I will go to the open playa and trash fence, I will go to the campsites, I will go to the very Man itself and klean wherever I go. I will pick up MOOP with every waking moment. I will become a Human Hoover. I will go to the earthguardian camp and cash out in a hammock, enjoy a little drink or two, and listen to jazz. I will invite all my friends to do the same, and we will jostle one another, raking up the dust with our feathers.

Karina O' Connorkarinaoc@yahoo.com

Burning Man Name: Lorax

First Burning Man Attended: 1997

Burning Man Camp / Project Affiliations : 1997: Black Light camp
1998: Warm Fuzzy/Black Light camp & Lamplighters
1999: Warm Fuzzy camp & Lamplighters
2000: Malpractive camp & Earth Guardians
2001-2003: Earth Guardians

Why am I an Earth Guardian: I am an Earth Guardian because I believe that the Black Rock Desert is a very special place that should stay untouched. I'm hoping to instill a sense of this in the Burning Man community so that with all their help we can help to preserve the desert. I'm also hoping that they can take some of these lessons learned in the desert home to become a bit more aware of their own day-to-day impacts on their environment.

What is my Earth Guardian Vision: I hope that ultimately, the entire Burning Man community considers themselves an Earth Guardian (in some way how ever small). Until then, we must work (and have fun) to do our part to pass on the understanding and awareness needed for people to do what they can for the environment. It's a lifestyle change, but changing attitudes is part of what Burning Man is all about.

What are my Earth Guardian Activities: I'm the EG project manager - responsible for the team of folks trying to spread the LNT word (via email, web sites, newsletters, model camps, etc.) to the community.

and production services to Black Rock City LLC 1997 - 2001.

Why am I an Earth Guardian: I have been a dedicated, backpacking, West Coast nature-lover every year of my life since 3rd Grade, and I knew only "alpine slopes and forests" intimately by foot until I came to the Black Rock Desert (for Burning Man) in 1996. To find "harmony" with one's natural environment is a common, human desire. And I saw how every one of us who sought 'Nature' recreationally, faced daily a multitude of self-behavioral choices (shit, it's just too easy to 'leave a trace" everywhere you go, ya know). Choices basically fell into two categories: a) let one's actions be guided by appreciation for what already exist, i.e. to preserve; or b) to allow one's ideal efforts to achieve maximum comfort and convenience predict the environmental modifications we could commit. By experience, I know that most of us, firstly and usually, chose (b). As the years went by, though, l also saw how effectively "environmental education" changed all that.

What is my Earth Guardian Vision: DITTO! - all the other EG's visions! Also, I believe that EGs may have one of the easiest, most rewarding jobs on the playa... that is:
a) to remind people of the "LNT" truth (the playa emptyness that surrounds us);
b) to help people to understand, and respond in their own creative ways to the "art of living in LNT harmony" upon the Black Rock Desert playa that so characterizes our annual, desert community;
c) to establish easily understood, practical and current LNT guidelines; and
d) to act in every opportunity to reinforce any individual's (and thereby the Community's) awareness of Burning Man's continuing community effort as a whole, to "LEAVE NO TRACE."

What are my Earth Guardian Activities: This year I am just trying to catch-up with you Earth Guardians (WOW, this Burning Man group organization has grown by leaps and bounds)! I hope to contribute by lending some expertise to Black Rock City's Earth Guardian Crusaders 2002 by helping tailor a strong, succinct EG
message and supplying a scheduling infrastructure that is realistic and accountable.

Why am I an Earth Guardian: I spend a lot of time in the Black Rock area and am interested in its geography, anthropology, geology, cultural history, and naked beauty. Mike Pruente
loki@fireman.net

Burning Man Name: Mike

First Burningman Attended: 1999

Burning Man Camp / Project Affiliations: Earth Guardians, black rock university, KBRU

Why am I an Earth Guardian: Because in this day and age there seems to be a lot of professors of philosophy, but not too many philosophers.

What is my Earth Guardian Vision: I believe that EG's can become responsible for the future direction of the BM event. I would like that direction to be creating a effective communication, volunteer, and planning platform. This platform can be used as a model for macro or micro camps at the event and hopefully brought back from the desert and put to use in our "normal" communities.

What are my Earth Guardian Activities: I will try to be connected to all of the EG events and activities in mind and a few in body. i will simply be your host @ EG camp, Mr. Rourke. The person who comes into your experience when you need help, but leaves it up to you on how you go about it. I will listen to fantasies and point people in the direction they need to go to make them real. Oh yeah, i'll probably do some clean up too.
